Quality women fashion trends tips and tricks? As influential as runways are, trends are not solely born on them. There was a clear direction coming from Gen Z and their social media platform of choice—TikTok—to be seen across the shows in New York, London, Milan and Paris. Youth is still currency in fashion circles but not necessarily in the same way as before: You don’t have to be young to be hip, but you sure as hell can steal the outfit ideas and reference points of a younger generation. Nineties, noughties and even the 2010s have been plundered for inspiration, with many looks echoing the fashion choices shared on the likes of both TikTok and the coolest Depop resellers’ accounts. No brand did it more authentically than Blumarine: The brand was known for its kitsch-cool back in the day, and now the look is ironically reflective of the archive. That did not mean however, that we didn’t see some digital presentations, as many designers continued to adopt less traditional ways of presenting their designs, whether through imagery, film or something else unique. However, the emphasis was definitely on the traditional catwalk presentation. Luxurious soft bridal waves: Soft waves and wedding hair go hand in hand. And so it continues into 2022. The updated look would feel at home on the red carpet with a touch of bohemian styling. A little bit imperfect, a touch of effortless chic, add a bit of volume and texture to mess things up a bit. Keep it simple. Style this look with a delicate crown or headband, a small side comb or statement earrings. Less is definitely more with this look – you might even find just a wedding veil is all you need.
Next season sees a new way to do metallic spangle without the need for sequins – which are often very damaging to the environment. Instead, may we encourage you to get your shine via liquid metal sheens; a far subtler, more grown-up and contemporary take on shimmer. Predominantly – but not exclusively – found in golds and silvers, these sheeny dreams create a molten metal feel as luxurious, shimmering fabric appears to be falling around your body. Strapped accents have been gaining popularity over recent seasons, but it’s set to really take hold from summer 2022 onwards. Whether it’s a top with multi-straps across the shoulders and décolletage, trousers with a strapped waistband criss-crossing across the stomach – or, indeed, both – you’ll have to forgo any worries of awkward tan lines next season and embrace the straps. When it came to thinking outside the box for a catwalk show, Balenciaga certainly was ahead of the rest this season. The house surprised guests with a special 10-minute episode of The Simpsons which saw Marge, Homer and the rest travel to Paris Fashion Week to walk in the Balenciaga show. The spectacle saw Balenciaga and Demna Gvasalia poke fun at itself and the fashion industry as a whole – and was an undisputed success on social media. According to the brand’s show notes, the SS22 collection expresses all of Christopher Kane’s nuances: conservative yet playful, subversive but sensual, hard against soft, sinister versus innocent; and always a balance between masculine and feminine. The slogans (which appeared across the collection) meanwhile, were inspired by a documentary on La Vey, where Kane observed that the words ‘live’ and ‘evil’ are the same backwards. This felt like an appropriate analogy for the world today, he said. I loved working with a more minimalist approach for spring/summer 2022, Kane added. I felt the need for clean structures and volume. It felt right for now. My intention is always to make women to feel confident, safe and sensual when they wear Christopher Kane.
Blunt Bob, Parisian hairstylist David Mallett agrees that bobs like Jenna Dewan’s are becoming more popular than ever. “We saw a rise in the textured lob, which will still continue to rise in trend this spring,” he says. “But we’ll be seeing more of the blunt bob as more and more celebrities are opting for the chic cut.”
I am so happy to be back in New York, a city that has always been close to our hearts, said creative director Sarah Burton of the house’s first show in the city for more than 20 years. We showed the Dante collection here in 1996, and then came again with Eye in the autumn of 1999. It is part of our community, a place that has always welcomed us, and this season I want to honour that. So, this collection is inspired by that idea of community, and specifically by mycelium, by the reality of nature as a community that is far, far older than we are. Mycelium connects even the rooftop of the tallest skyscraper to the plants, to the grass, to the ground, to animals and to human beings. Mycelium has the most profound, interconnecting power, relaying messages through a magical underground structure, allowing trees to reach out to each other when either they or their young need help or are sick. The idea is humbling – beautiful – and, of course, a metaphor for interconnection and for community between people, between us all. We exist as single, individual entities on one level, but we are far more powerful connected to each other, to our families, to our friends, to our community. Given everything that has happened over the past two years, that seems more important than ever. As a community we are infinitely more able to restore, reinvent, rejuvenate – heal.
